Rev. Ranjan Fernando Our Mission Field The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) is a multi-religious and multi-ethnic island nation off the tip of India. The population of 19 million people is primarily composed of Sinhalese Buddhists (68%), Tamil Hindus (15%), Muslims (7%), and Christians (8%). The island was under Portugese, Dutch, and British colonial rule for 450 years before gaining independence in 1948. The country has suffered from an ongoing civil war since 1983. There are over 23,000 villages in Sri Lanka, and many of them have not received the message of salvation. Evangelism Through church planting, Bible correspondence courses, Sunday school classes, and prayer meetings, UCF is witnessing many people coming to faith in Jesus Christ, from both Buddhist and Hindu backgrounds. UCF pastors and evangelists receive minimal monthly allowances, and there is much need for the adequate support of these hard-working staff members and their families. Education UCF operates several nursery school programs, Children's Centers and Children's Homes in rural areas where no child-care or early education is available, and provides free school materials to needy children. UCF also provides scholarships for students attending Bible training programs. Social Outreach Giving assistance to those in need is central to the ministry of UCF. Such assistance includes: Traveling medical clinics, first aid supplies, housing assistance, sewing centers for the unemployed, vocational training, emergency relief for floods, droughts, etc., and clothing drives for refugees. |
